Once upon a time, there was a man named Kong Rong in the state of Lu. He was known for his intelligence from an early age. One day, his father placed some pears on the table, and all the children scrambled to grab them. However, Kong Rong remained seated quietly without joining the fray. When asked why, he replied, “As the younger brother, I should let my elder brother take the larger pear first; if my brother has not taken it yet, then I should also yield.” Hearing this, his father was very pleased and said to their neighbors, “This child will surely accomplish great things.”
Later generations used this story as a metaphor for humility and yielding, calling it “Kong Rong Giving the Pear.”
